Story
Kanchipuram silks have a long history of incorporating animals & birds in their weaving. In fact, most motifs they say are inspired by temple architecture. Hence it is not uncommon to see annapakshi, hamsa, yanai, kudurai, gandaberunda, yazhi, vaatu, kili, simham & peacock in your sarees. These birds and animals are most commonly represented in the temple architecture. It is worth noting that some of these beasts like Yazhi & Gandaberunda do not exist and are inspired by mythology. Wearing these is like wearing a piece of history itself. Apart from this, some motifs are inspired by folklore. We also see motifs of women in various dancing poses. However, human figures are rare to find. Of late, we can find pichawai inspired cows, flying horses and other such new motifs inspired from other weave clusters. The shape of birds can also be inspired by other weaves. For instance, it is not uncommon to find bomkai and ohter benarasi motifs in Kanchipuram.
Care Instructions
Kalamkari is an ancient art of hand-painting on textiles that has been passed on across generations. Today we have a beautiful heritage of Kalamkari that has assimilated into our culture. Earlier Kalamkari was used to make beautiful tapestry and tent arts too. Today it’s most commonly used on textile to enhance fabrics. Kalamkari is usually done using natural dyes and hand washing them is not recommended.
# We highly recommend dry cleaning Kalamkari
# Since natural dyes are involved avoid spraying perfume and harsh chemicals directly on the fabric
# Kalamkari sarees are washed in natural dyes including milk which may leave a mild smell which diminishes with usage. Air dry fabrics and sarees if you find the smell too pungent
# Since natural dyes are used, these fabrics are beautifully with age. Some imperfection is expected and normal
# Kalamkaris should not be folded and stored for prolonged periods and be aired regularly to avoid dye bleeding We recommend taking care of these pieces of art to ensure they have a long life.
