An off-white hand woven pure Kanchipuram silk with varied checks in black and a bright green selvedge was a no-brainer for us to add to this range. Traditional and modern seldom come together so easily. Teamed with a red embroidered silk  blouse to bring out that red pallu  and a pair of green stone silver drop earrings, we are not sure if there possibly can be a better pairing.

Care Instructions

Silk is made from the cocoon of silk worms. India has a rich heritage of silk weaving. Apart from Mulberry silk, India is known for producing tussar, muga and ahimsa silks. Some of these are wild and some of these are farmed commercially. Each of these silks has its own property when it comes to sheen, shine and wear. Being a natural fabric, silk does shed, wear and tear with age. However, caring for them ensures they have a long life. Silk Care & Wash

# We recommend air drying silks after every use. Silks do not require washing after every wear unless soiled.

# We recommend giving our sarees for dry cleaning for the first few washes.

# Silk sarees can be washed at home using a gentle detergent or soap nuts. Avoid soaking & scrubbing these fabrics. Any stains should be dry cleaned.

# Avoid tumble dry and instead line dry away from direct sunlight.

# Silk sarees should be regularly worn to avoid fraying. If kept in humid or dry spaces for long without wear, silks are likely to deteriorate. So wear your sarees well.

# If you are unable to wear them regularly, remove them and change folds from time to time. We do not recommend hanging them. If stacked, ensure there isn’t too much weight on the sarees.

# Avoid using naphthalene balls or other chemicals while storing silks. Heavy silks may be stores in muslin bags.

# If you can, roll them on wooden rods to store them wrinkle free. However, gentle folding works well too.

Story

Kattam (கட்டம்) literally means checks. However, a simple checked idea can be manifested in myriad different ways. By arranging alternative colours in the warp and weft, a chess-board like design is born. T hese can be further varied in thickness. The minute checks are called podi kattams. When more than 2-3 colours are used to achieve the checks, the result is a palum pazhamum checks. The famed floors of highcourt in white and black inspire the papli checks. When zari lines create the checked pattern, they give rise to another variant. Zari checks can be used to encase motifs like mayil and chakram. When two allied shades are used in the weave, the result is a basket like design called pai madi . As you can see, imagine knows no bounds and there are thousands of ways to manifest checks. What we love is checks do not go out of style. At aavaranaa, we explore how these checks can be incorporated to create contemporary ideas while equally embracing a curated range of traditional silks. Our intervention with traditional motifs lies in colours while we also work on some fresh, modern ideas.
